More Lorax/Doctor Who.
Of course I had to make Grammy Norma the Once-ler’s companion.
She traveled with him a long time ago. I was debating whether or not to have him still be young when he shows up and meets Ted. I thought it would be too bittersweet. She has aged, grayed, raised a daughter and a grandson. Yet he looks exactly as she remembers him. I’m still kicking the idea around in my head. It may happen. Wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey and all that.
Hmm, some elaboration on these sketches. The first one is their initial meeting. The Once-ler is such a charmer. *blush* The second is after she agrees to travel with him. He encourages her to let her hair down.
In my headcannon, she was very self-conscious about her hair, and was constantly trying to tame it. She tries straightening it, using special shampoos, etc., but to no avail. It’s just a wonderfully curly mess. But The Once-ler, being the intergalactic traveler that he is, isn’t swayed by petty things like what’s ‘fashionable’.
In short, she was a very shy and reserved person before he came along. She never felt like she quite fit in. She tried to conform, she tried to be the person that she thought she should be. But after traveling with The Once-ler and seeing all the wonders and horrors of the universe, she really came into her own. (Hence her being such a kick-ass old lady.)
I kinda tried emulating Curly’s style a bit, especially for Norma. I also kept the Once-ler’s ‘greedy’ outfit. Let’s face it, he looks cool. And there’s no reason he can’t look cool and be the good guy. I dunno, it seems that everyone associates his ‘Greedler’ outfit with him being evil. I wanted to try and change that, if only a little bit.
This idea still needs some more work, and I am completely open to suggestions and criticisms. I encourage them, in fact. Join me, Whovian Oncelings!
