Since I’m already on a Glen Keane theme thanks to the last video I reblogged, I thought I’d put up some key frames from The Little Mermaid. I’ve found that although it’s not my favourite Disney film, I watch this one more than any other (this and Snow White) just because of that rare and magical moment when you feel the animation and the music connect on a really true, emotional level. Keane was originally down to animate Ursula, but he saw the video of Jodie Benson recording ‘Part of Your World’ and knew that he had to animate Ariel. Music is a great source of inspiration for him and his favourite composer is Beethoven, which is another reason why I want to work for him. Music is incredibly important to me as well and if I’m drawing, I find myself more connected with my characters if I’m listening to some suitable music.

And just to be picky, Beethoven is my favourite composer too, his 5th Piano Concerto is absolutely exquisite and I’ve listened to his Pastoral Symphony more than any other piece of classical music on my itunes.

This is probably my favorite scene from the Little Mermaid. I love the simplicity, the lighting, and the animation. You can just feel Ariel breaking free.
